General use
EMP0393 Palestrina, Giovanni Pierluigi da Missa Ut Re Mi Fa
SSATTB Mass Ordinary, General Use £9.50
This mass, together with the Missa BMV, forms the 6-part section of Palestrina's Third Book of masses for 4, 5 and 6 voices (1570). There exists a manuscript in the library of the Sistine Chapel, giving the date as 1563, so we may suppose the mass to date from Palestrina's return, after his difficult years at S. John Lateran, to S. Maria Maggiore. As well as being unusually scored - for SSAATB - it is his only Hexachord Mass, and displays his considerable gifts: the second Superius sings only the cantus firmus, ascending and descending, either in the natural or the hard hexachord, but in an enormously varied and varying series of rhythms. In the final Agnus a third Alto sings in canon a fifth below the second Superius. The edition has now been revised and includes the Credo. Here a 4th lower than the high-clef original.

EMP0394 Palestrina, Giovanni Pierluigi da Pater noster
SSTTB Prayer, General Use £3.00
EMP0504 Purcell, Henry Remember not Lord our offences
SSATB org Anthem, General Use £3.00
This very familiar piece is scored throughout for 5-part chorus. The text is taken from the Litany, and remained unchanged in all English prayer-books from 1549 to 1662.
EMP0619 Szamotuł, Wacław z Już się zmierzka
SATB Evening use, General Use £2.50
One of the few Renaissance pieces with a Polish text which have found their way into the repertoire. A simple but effective setting of a prayer for protection during the night
EMP0252 Taverner, John O Willelme
SMATB Votive Antiphon, General Use £3.00
A reconstruction of the piece as it was probably originally intended. It survives incomplete, lacking the Tenor, in Christ Church and Peterhouse mss, in one with the title Christe Jesu, in the other as O Christe Jesu, and incorporating a prayer in the one case for Henry VIII and in the other for Elizabeth I. It seems to have started life as a setting of the Antiphon to St William (of York) sung each evening at Cardinal College (later Christ Church), Oxford and incporporating a prayer for Cardinal Wolsey, Founder of the College. It provided the model for the Missa O Willelme, also known as the 'Small Devotion' Mass.
EMP0768 Turges (Sturges), Edmund Gaude flore virginali
SSATB Votive Antiphon (Mary), General Use £5.00
A magnificent and beautiful piece, one of no less than 12 settings in the Eton Choirbook, including two by Turges. The text is a meditation on the Seven Joyful Mysteries of the Virgin Mary. This setting, with three boys’ voices, was possibly composed for New College, Oxford.
EMP1014 Various Three French Masses
SATB Mass Ordinary, General Use £11.10
Three masses by French composers.
EMP0320 Willaert, Adrian Missa Mente tota (without Credo)
ATTBaBB Mass Ordinary, General Use £8.70
As far as we know this is the only modern edition of the piece, a parody on part of Josquin's Vultum tuum.
EMP0264 Willaert, Adrian O salutaris hostia
SATTBaB Communion, General Use Manuscript edition £4.00
The text appears chiefly in connection with Corpus Christi, but the work is generally sung as a Communion motet.
EMP0687 de Bournonville, Jean Missa Ave maris stella
SATB Mass Ordinary, General Use £4.75
One of three French masses added to our catalogue in summer 2006. De Bournonville worked mainly in Amiens, but near the end of his life was appointed to the Sainte Chapelle, an appointment reflecting the high regrad in which he was held. His masses are counted among the best of the period. This setting, a paraphrase mass on the Marian Vesper hymn, is lovely. At present the Credo is not included, due to limited time with the source, but it will be added as soon as possible.
EMP1678 de Bournonville, Jean Missa Ave maris stella
SATB Mass Ordinary, General Use £6.00
One of three French masses added to our catalogue in summer 2006. De Bournonville worked mainly in Amiens, but near the end of his life was appointed to the Sainte Chapelle, an appointment reflecting the high regrad in which he was held. His masses are counted among the best of the period. This setting, a paraphrase mass on the Marian Vesper hymn, is lovely. This version includes the Credo.
EMP0132 de Kerle, Jacobus Responsory III: Exaudi Deus noster
SATB General Use £5.00
Composed for the Council of Trent
EMP0291 de Monte, Philippe Laudate Dominum
SMABa SATB Psalm-Motet, General Use £4.00
A splendid double-choir setting
EMP0386 de Monte, Philippe Missa Cara la vita mia
SSATB Mass Ordinary, General Use Other £10.30
Based on the madrigal by Wert.
EMP0271 Anonymous Mass of the Cyprus MS (Turin J.II.9)
SST/SAT Mass Ordinary, Summer Bob Mitchell Manuscript edition £6.00
The only cyclic mass in the well-known Cypriot manuscript, now in the library at Turin. from possibly as early as 1410. This edition was commissioned for the first Schola Polyphonica summer school in Cyprus in July 1994 and performed at Ayia Kyriaki, Paphos.
EMP1077 Merulo, Claudio Magna enim sunt iudicia tua
SAATTB Respond, Summer £3.00
One of several new pieces by Merulo which we are publishing for the International Academy of Sacred Music 2010 in Venice. The text is a Respond in August, and thus occupies a somewhat obscure place in the liturgy. It could well be political in origin. 'For thy judgments, O Lord, are great, and thy words cannot be expressed: For thou didst magnify thy people, O Lord, and didst honour them.' Wisdom 17, 1; 19,20
EMP0034 Byrd, William Ave verum corpus
SATB Motet general, Eucharist £3.00
One of the best-known and favourite pieces from the great Gradualia. The quasi-homophony found in so many highly expressive Renaissance pieces gives it an extraordinary intensity.
EMP1242 Hassler, Hans Leo Missa II (Missa secunda)
SATB Mass Ordinary, Eucharist £5.00
One of the better-known the masses of Hassler. A high-clef piece usually offered, as here, a third lower than notated.
EMP1317 Hassler, Hans Leo Missa II (Missa secunda)
SATB Mass Ordinary, Eucharist £5.00
One of the better-known the masses of Hassler. A high-clef piece, here offered a fourth lower than notated.
EMP0492 Wert, Giaches de O sacrum convivium
SATTB Communion, Eucharist £3.00
EMP0693 Verdelot, Philippe In te Domine speravi.
SATBaB Respond, Unidentified £4.00
A powerful motet with two simultaneous texts, which survives in very differing and probably corrupt forms. My edition is based on the Psalmorum selectarum...1553-4, whereas the version in the Complete Works (CMM28) is drawn from a Roman manuscript in which the voice carrying the second text is transmitted erroneously. The principal text is of course Verses of Psalm 30; the secondary text 'Divitias et paupertates' is part of the respond Verbum iniquum. This text is presented in different prolations in the two halves of the piece, and is thus 'isorhythmic,' by the time of composition an antiquated device.

A simple but effective alternatim setting.
EMP0689 Byrd, William 8 motets for male voices

EMP0638 Croce, Giovanni Missa 6 vocum
SSATTB Mass Ordinary £7.90
The first modern edition of Croce's only - and lovely - 6-voice mass, which survives complete in only one copy in the cathedral archive in Brescia. In that print it follows reprints of Croce's three 5-voice masses and is entitled simply 'Missa Quarta' (fourth mass). I have given it the working title Missa 6 vocum (mass for 6 voices). It is thought to be a parody mass whose model has not so far been identified. This version is a tone below original pitch.
