The mass
EMP0021 Byrd, William Mass propers for the Feast of the Nativity BVM
SATBaB Mass Propers, Nativity BVM (September 8) £6.00
The archetypal Mary Mass, providing most of the familiar segments re-used in many of the other Propers. Its atypical ad aequales scoring (TrMATBa) means it can be transposed to suit: I offer it at two standard ranges, either a tone or a fourth lower than the original (equivalent to SATBaB for mixed or male voices).
EMP0764 Byrd, William Mass propers for the Feast of the Nativity BVM
SATBaB Mass Propers, Nativity BVM (September 8) £6.00
The archetypal Mary Mass, providing most of the familiar segments re-used in many of the other Propers. Its atypical ad aequales scoring (TrMATBa) means it can be transposed to suit: I offer it at two standard ranges, either a tone or a fourth lower than the original (equivalent to SATBaB for mixed or male voices).
EMP1124 Isaac, Heinrich De Apostolis Officium
SATB Mass Propers, Feasts of Apostles £6.00
A revised and enlarged edition of the Propers for Feasts of Apostles from the Choralis Constantinus. Introit: Mihi autem nimis; Alleluia: Non vos me elegistis; Sequence: Clare sanctorum senatus; Communion: Ego dico vobis
EMP0754 Isaac, Heinrich In Ascensione Domini
SATTBaB Mass Propers, Ascension £4.00
Mass propers from Choralis Constantinus: Introit - Viri Galilaei, Alleluia - Dominus in Sina, Communion - Psallite Domino.
EMP0110 Isaac, Heinrich Misericordia Domini
SATB Mass Propers, Second Sunday after Easter Manuscript edition £4.75
Choralis Constantinus: Introit, Alleluia, Communion
EMP0753 Isaac, Heinrich Nativitatis Marie Officium
SATB Mass Propers, Nativity BVM (September 8) £4.00
Mass propers from Choralis Constantinus: Introit - Gaudeamus omnes/Cum iocunditate, Alleluia - Nativitas Virginis, Communio - Diffusa est. The Introit poses a considerable puzzle as it offers dual texts, one of which is from the Office and has nothing to do with the Mass.
EMP0583 de la Rue, Pierre Missa pro Defunctis
various Mass Propers, Requiem £6.00
Although the original cleffing clearly indicates transposition, we also offer the work here at original pitch. Some movements are in normal (SATB) clefs, while others use the rare Gamma-3 clef taking the lowest Bass voice down to bottom Bflat.
EMP1031 Byrd, William Alleluia. Ave Maria
SSATB Introitus, Votive Mass BVM £4.00
The Greater Alleluia for the Mass of the Annunciation when this falls in Eastertide. Byrd printed it out of order in the Gradualia but in the form in which it there appears it belongs to the Annunciation. Here at original high-clef pitch.
EMP0571 Croce, Giovanni Exaudi Deus
SATB Introitus, Lent £2.50
A lovely little piece, which has become a favourite. The text (from Psalm 54) was frequently sung as part of the Introit or at the Communion: Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication. Attend unto me, and hear me. Available separately or in 'Three motets for four voices'.
EMP1043 Croce, Giovanni Laudans exultet gaudio
SATB SATB Introitus, All Saints (November 1) £4.00
Version of EMP0725 adapted for use on the Feast of All Saints.
EMP0605 Gabrieli, Andrea Letare Hierusalem
SAATB Introitus, Laetare Sunday (4th Sunday in Lent) £3.00
A suitably joyful setting for the one Sunday in Lent where violet vestments are set aside.
EMP0421 Handl, Jakob (Gallus) Rorate coeli
SSATBB Introitus, Marian Feasts £3.00
EMP0114 Isaac, Heinrich Salve sancta parens a6
SSATTB Introitus, Marian Feasts £3.00
Magnificent 6-part Introit, probably from the Imperial Hofkapelle of Maximilian, and most likely intended for Nativity BVM.
EMP0781 Merulo, Claudio Exaudi Domine
SSATTBB Introitus, Ascension £4.00
The text is from Ps 26, 7-8 and forms the Introit for the Sunday after Ascension
EMP1030 Procter, Michael Ich rufe dich an

Einfache 3-stimmige Vertonung des Eröffnungsverses. Für die Choralschola St Michael, Weingarten.
EMP1252 Procter, Michael Ich will in Gerechtigkeit

EMP1143 Procter, Michael Von Herzen will ich mich freuen
unison Introitus, Conception of BVM (December 8) £2.75
Another in a growing series of simple settings for liturgical use, originally composed for St Michael, Weingarten. This simple setting includes a congegational antiphon and two Psalm verses to be sung by the Cantor or Schola. (In German)
EMP1132 Procter, Michael Würdest du, Herr, uns’re Sünden beachten
SAB Introitus, 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time £2.50
Another in a growing series of simple 3-part settings for liturgical use, originally composed for the Choralschola of St Michael, Weingarten. This is the Introit for the 28th Sunday of the year. (In German)
EMP0525 Arcadelt. Jacques Haec dies
SATB Graduale, Easter £3.00
This is one of only 24 Latin sacred motets by Arcadelt, who is better known for his over 120 chansons and 200 madrigals. But his output also includes three masses, Lamentations and Magnificat settings. Most of the motets are settings of liturgical texts: Haec dies is of course the Gradual on Easter Day. It is one of three motets printed in Moderne's anthology Motetti del fiore in 1532.
EMP0423 Finck, Heinrich Veni sancte spiritus
SAATTBB Alleluia, Pentecost (Whitsun) £4.00
An unsual and very grand setting for seven voices, thought to have been composed for the Wedding of Ulrich von Württemberg and Sabine von Bayern in 1511, the occasion for which the great Wedding mass was also composed.
EMP0073 Anonymous Benedicta es
ATB Sequence, Votive Mass BVM £3.00
This piece is attributed in the manuscript to 'De Anglia'. It is English in style and possibly by Dunstable or Leonel Power.
EMP0334 Croce, Giovanni Stabat Mater
SATB SATB Sequence, Seven Sorrows of Mary (Maria perdolens), (September 15) £2.50
Simple faburden/'Anglican chant' setting
EMP0791 Josquin des Pres Benedicta es celorum regina
SAATBB Sequence, Marian Feasts £4.75
A revised edition of Josquin's famous piece, which provided the model for many parodies. Josquin probably took the idea from an anonymous English 3-voice setting (EMP0073 in my catalogue) which was based on the chant Sequence: this was in turn a contrafactum of a very early sequence for Holy Trinity, which probably derived from the even earlier jubilus of the Alleluia.
EMP0129 Josquin des Pres Stabat Mater...Christe verbum
SAATB Sequence, Seven Sorrows of Mary (Maria perdolens), (September 15) Manuscript edition £4.75
Another Marian piece retexted by the Protestants!
EMP0568 Palestrina, Giovanni Pierluigi da Stabat Mater dolorosa
SATB SATB Sequence, Seven Sorrows of Mary (Maria perdolens), (September 15) £5.00
The famous double-choir setting, here offered in a revised edition with original note-values, a fourth lower than the high clef original. Altos in 'octave treble' tenor clef.
EMP1091 Palestrina, Giovanni Pierluigi da Stabat Mater dolorosa
SATB SATB Sequence, Seven Sorrows of Mary (Maria perdolens), (September 15) £5.00
The famous double-choir setting, here offered in a revised edition with original note-values, a fourth lower than the high clef original. Altos in treble clef.
EMP0493 Willaert, Adrian Inviolata, integra et casta es Maria
SSMATTB Mary Sequence, Marian Feasts £4.75
A magnificent piece, scored for seven voices. It includes a triple canon as if to outdo Josquin's famous setting.
EMP0266 Willaert, Adrian Victimae Paschali
SSATTB Sequence, Easter £4.75
Now in Sibelius version available at different pitches: the original is G-Dorian, i.e. high clefs. A magnificent and very powerful piece.
EMP0036 Byrd, William Diffusa est gratia
SMATB Offertorium, Votive Mass BVM £2.50
This beautiful miniature (lasting about a minute) is found in the first book of Byrd's Gradualia. It is one of the tricky items, being used twice, and although Byrd printed it as the opening section of the long Gradual-Tract group for the Annunciation (in Lent), it may well have been composed initially as the Offertory for the Purification. Byrd failed to provide the piece with a final close, so I give it with an optional cadence.
EMP0765 Byrd, William Diffusa est gratia
SSATB Offertorium, Marian Feasts £2.50
This lovely piece is one of the few with which Byrd made mistakes in his immense Gradualia: the piece is provided in the short form required when it is sung in the Gradual music for the Annunciation and the Assumption, and lacks the end of the text when it is the Offertory. I have provided a final cadence and an alternative end with the complete text.
EMP0141 Lassus, Roland de (Orlandus Lassus, Orlando di Lasso) Justorum animae
SSATB Offertorium, All Saints (November 1) £3.00
One of Lassus' most sublime pieces. Also the Offertory for Feasts of Martyrs. Here a fourth lower than the original.
EMP1123 Lassus, Roland de (Orlandus Lassus, Orlando di Lasso) Justorum animae
SSATB Offertorium, All Saints (November 1) £3.00
One of Lassus' most sublime pieces. Also the Offertory for Feasts of Martyrs. Here offered a third lower than the high-clef original.
EMP1133 Lassus, Roland de (Orlandus Lassus, Orlando di Lasso) Justorum animae
SSATB Offertorium, All Saints (November 1) £3.00
One of Lassus' most sublime pieces. Also the Offertory for Feasts of Martyrs. Here a tone lower than the original.
EMP0961 Procter, Michael Ubi caritas et amor
SABa Offertorium, In Cena Domini (Maundy Thursday, Gründonnerstag) £2.50
A simple three-voice arrangement of the plainsong sung either at the Offertory or during the washing of feet at the Mass of the Last Supper.
